Mt. Fansipan Trek – The “Cat Cat” Route

At 3,143 metres Mt. Fansipan is Vietnam’s highest mountain. Although Fansipan is only 9 km from Sapa town but it takes at least three days to get to the peak and back. The top is accessible year-round to anybody, so long as they are in good shape. As there are no mountain huts on the way, we will be camping. Our porters carry the equipment and food. No ropes or technical climbing skills are needed, just endurance and plenty of energy. The terrain is rugged, wet and often cold.
Day 1: Hanoi – Sapa

Day 4: Trek to summit and return to first camp (2,500m)
Day 5: First camp – Lao Cai - Sapa - Hanoi

Day 1: Hanoi – Sapa
Pick up in hotel. This evening we take the overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai near the Chinese border. Overnight on train.

Day 2: Sapa (B/L/D)
Upon arrival in Lao Cai we drive the 35kms uphill to the beautiful town of Sapa. Along the way, the ride give you a glimpse of the stunning vistas and impressive rice terraces.The morning will be free to walk around this former French hill station town. Later we visit the market and walk up Ham Rong hill for some good panoramic views of Sapa town and the surrounding valleys. Stay overnight in Sapa

Day 3: Sapa - first camp (2,500 m) (B/L/D)
After breakfast in the hotel we will meet our support crew, who will carry all equipment, foods and our clothing. We will carry our day pack with water, jacket and camera only. Today we will begin the first part of our ascent  with a trek through terraced rice paddies and some of the hilltribe villages. Setting out from Sapa we descend into the nearby village of Cat Cat and cross Muong Hoa River. Past the river we start our upward trek to reach an elevation of 1,700m where we will have lunch break. In the afternoon we will continue trek to the first base camp at an elevation of 2,300 m. The terrain in the afternoon becomes steeper and more difficult as we trek through massive Arrowroot plantations and up steeper slopes surrounded by bamboo. Here we set up camp for the night on the mountain enclosed by bamboo.

Day 4: Trek to summit and return to first camp (2,500m) (B/L/D)
After our first night on the mountain we set out for summit, which will take the best part of the day. As we continue on we pass through primary forest containing giant, centuries old pine trees and expanses of yellow bamboo. Our continuing trek will take us to an altitude of over 3,000m as we arrive at the roof of Vietnam: Fansipan Peak. Once at the summit we will have time to savour the best panorama in Vietnam.

Day 5: First camp – Sapa - Lao Cai - Hanoi(B/L/D)
Today it’s downhill just about all the way. Following breakfast we begin our descent and reach Sapa by around lunchtime. From here we will return by road to Lao Cai for the overnight return train journey to Hanoi. Overnight on train.


Day 6: Hanoi
Upon arrival at Hanoi Railway Station you will be transferred back to hotel.
